Carpenter ants
How to identify carpenter ants?
Measuring between one and two centimeters, carpenter ants are black in color and sometimes carry a red mark on the thorax, depending on the species. Carpenter ants are recognizable by their imposing size and robustness.
Carpenter ants build their nest in wood. They dig much longer galleries than those of termites. Carpenter ants do not eat wood; they reject it outside their galleries in the form of fine shavings that look like sawdust.
How to find carpenter ant nests?
Contrary to popular belief, carpenter ants do not feed on wood, they rather use it to create their nest. You might therefore find wood chips on the floor, near door holes or crevices, in your basement, in your garage or any other isolated place.
What attracts carpenter ants?
Insects and other small invertebrates, as well as honeydew produced by aphids and other insects are their main food sources. The presence of protein and sugary foods in and around houses also attract foraging workers.
Why am I invaded by ants?
Why do they stick? Once winter is over, the ants are looking for food for their colony. They then sneak through windows, door frames, cracks in the house or even water pipes.
