How to identify a spider

  1. Check that you are indeed dealing with a spider. People often think of spiders as insects, but in fact they are very different. Check that the creature you observe has the characteristics of spiders.

    • A body divided into two parts. While insects have a body made up of three segments, spiders only have two.

    • Legs 8 in number. Do not confuse the antennae of insects with legs.

    • The absence of wings. There are no spiders with wings. No matter how strongly the creature you observe resembles a spider, if it has wings, it is definitely not a spider.

    • Identify common species near you. If you live IN QUEBEC, you have very little risk of encountering the terrifying banana spider (although it is not totally impossible). Familiarizing yourself with the species that live near you is a good way to narrow down the choices regarding identification.

    • If you want, use other resources to learn more. Borrow books from the library, or consult databases on the Internet. You can organize your searches according to different regions of the world.

    • Observe the spider's habitat. You will learn a lot of things from the place where you met the critter. It is the same for its web or the burrow in which it lives. Try to answer a number of questions.

    • Where did you find the spider? In the basement, in the bathroom, in a shed, outside? Was the place dark (as the tarantula baboon prefers) or very bright? Was it a dry or wet place (perhaps even in water, as with the argyronet)?

    • What type of web does it weave? Is it a classic cobweb or just a few threads that aren't actually woven? Also observe the shape of the canvas. Is it tunnel-shaped, like that of the atypidae.

    •  Tips

    • If you want to rid your home of spiders, consider destroying their egg sacs.

    • Before going on vacation, you can find out about the spiders living in the region of the globe that you are going to visit. This might be useful to you. You will find guides in a bookstore or library

    • Warnings

    • Consult a physician if bitten by a poisonous spider of an unknown species or if allergic to spider bites.

    • Spiders all have venom because of the structure of their mouths, they cannot chew. However, they do not all have a venom that has dangerous effects for humans.

    • Avoid approaching an unknown species, as some are very aggressive and harmless species can be mistaken for dangerous species.
